Animated Star Wars And Other Things That Should Never Be
George Lucas once joked that he loves making movies except that he has to deal with actors. Seems like he finally made his own dreams come true: to make a Star Wars film with no actors. Now, I realize that this is not exactly the forum for discussing Star Wars, but I also know how many of you cannot deny your adoration for the genre (yes, I think it gets its own genre, and the term “sci-fi” just doesn’t do it justice), so maybe not so inappropriate after all, eh?
I feel maybe it’s time to start compiling a list of things that should never be, this being among the first bastardizations of many. I’m all for technology and how it helps our lives everyday, but doing away with people altogether? Has Lucas seen Terminator? So, let’s start a list, specific to our industry, of things that should never be (or should never come back).
I’ll start: iPhone apps that churn out production designs given just a few parameters (no designers required). Hmmmmm?

My vote goes toward cup holders on consoles. Just not a good thing to promote.

Oh Marion… What are all those talented VO artists gonna think about you relegating them to the heap ? And what, are we to believe that all animation has no value ? What about all the genius spoofs of Star Wars that have been done by Robot Chicken or Family Guy ? If there were no animation, then Patrick wouldn’t have this whole Guild of Calamitous Intent club he’s got going with the other Designer/Programmers who have no life and are forced to sit watching late night Cartoon Network instead of dating… (they can quote you lines from Venture Brothers… It’s scary !)… And by the way have you SEEN the new DMX control app for iPhone ? It’s sexy, if a bit useless beyond a few instruments.
I nominate Media Servers… as in NO MORE please. We’ve got enough thank you. Mainlight, what were you THINKING ?

Unless you are eight years old, all of the Star Wars series have pretty poor dialogue and acting. This especially holds true for the last three installments. Lucas was even able to make a great actor like Samuel L. Jackson look bad. In my opinion is not a big deal that the franchise is going to animation since it is geared to sell toys to children and middle-aged geeks.

Come on Bob, don’t you want a combination console/media player/render farm/vision studio/whiskey still/toaster oven (with optional bagel slot)?
Anyways, things that should never be? How about mice that map your brain waves into mouse movements….. did no one see the terminator? or the sequel?
Oh, and if Jar-Jar Binks makes an animated appearance, I’m gonna start taking my DP12000 to movie theaters and projecting gone with the wind over the animated star wars movie just so no one has to see that little pariah try to weasel his way into another forced movie classic.
Sorry, I’m a little bitter.
