Jules Fisher, guest blogger and creative consultant, BLMC

Its wonderful to be involved with the 13th master class. Judging from the questions asked today after my lecture this is the brightest group of students we have had. I am looking forward to hearing the rest of the talented speakers. See you next year.

I enjoyed listening to Jules Fisher’s presentation. It is always beneficial for me to hear the experiences of a lighting veteran, and learn new ways of approaching a project that will make me a better designer. I especially felt enlightened (pun intended) by his recommendation to always try to do something different and to not let your work be predictable. The goal of pushing yourself to new experiences and expectations was well conveyed in his presentation.

At the lunch, I didn’t spend much time looking at the manufacturers’ products (except the VL3500 Wash and the EOS console), but I took advantage of networking with some industry professionals. It was an excellent opportunity to catch up with some fellow industry professionals, and make some new friends.

Live Design has created a welcoming and nurturing environment that supports upcoming and new designers trying to make and break their way into the buisness. This is an amazing opportunity to meet people internationally and learn about the industry, its designers, products, and methods.

Thanks to this event, I feel more prepared to start my education for a B.F.A. for in lighting design at NCSA , I am more inspired, and I hope to make this an anual attending.

I went to BLMC to see Jules Fisher, and I was amazed with the philosphy he brought to the topic. Most of what he spoke about was on deeper level than I had expected, and he dealt quite a bit with the theory of shadow and light. He presented many excellent ideas on lighting for the stage. He also discussed dealing with moving lights, and the collaborative process that theatre represents. It was great to hear him talk. I also enjoyed listening to ETC’s presentation on the new EOS console. It was a great oppurtunity to hear from them about the new board. So far, I’ve really enjoyed my time at BLMC.

While it has only been a couple of hours since the seminar began, I’ve already heard more intelligent people talking about lighting than I have all year. Jules Fisher’s seminar on an approach to lighting the stage was not just insightful, it was interesting. Hearing Jules talk about lighting design is like having Tiger Woods talk about golf. And the rest of the masters have yet to take the stage… pretty cool, if I had to summarize.
