Here is another “webisode” from PRG, this one on the design and technical components of Don Holder’s lighting. Note that the clips of Holder were filmed during the designer’s session on Spider-Man at this year’s Broadway Lighting Master Classes.
Here is a sequence of images from Spider-Man 1.0 as our masked webslinger rescues Mary Jane Watson from the Brooklyn Bridge. One of the easiest ways to spot that this is from the earlier version of the show is the presence of the guitarist stage right, who returned to the rest of the orchestra for 2.0. Building and installing the ramp was a particular challenge for the technical crew, who will be featured in posts going up next week. Photos by Jacob Cohl.

“From what Julie had envisioned and George was creating, I got the sense of a world that included very bright, bold, dynamic color, particularly in the backgrounds,” says Don Holder of his lighting for Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. Holder won a Tony Award for the Taymor-directed The Lion King and also lit McKinley’s Broadway debut, The Boy From Oz. “What we were building was a 3D comic book world.”
The hiatus period brought about certain changes to this vision. “The new creative team felt it needed to be warmer and more accessible,” says Holder. “They wanted the foregrounds to be infused with color and texture, whereas Julie wanted them icy and edgy, and we moved toward a high-contrast HMI palette that lit all the actors and carved out the 3D space. I had to figure out how to get the foreground and background together without everything turning into mud.” Read the rest of this entry »
